The drums of war continue their beat in the Middle East. Now, it is Syria’s turn to prepare for the next round of bombings in the region. Just as it began with Iraq, Iran, Libya, Yemen and others, the Western powers have begun to exercise pressure on Bashar al-Assad and his government by imposing economic sanctions.
Although many historians and observers believe that Assad is an important ally for the west, others point out the fact that so was Muammar Gadhafi a few weeks ago. Although the sanctions are supposed to make it harder for certain groups in Syria to get their hands on weapons and for some companies to do business, it is not likely that European Union’s economic or financial limitations affect President Assad directly.
