Facing growing opposition to his economic proposals and dimming prospects that Congress will pass other parts of his agenda, President Obama told a Hispanic group in Washington Wednesday that when it comes to the issue of immigration, “I’d like to work my way around Congress.”
“As I mentioned when I was at La Raza a few weeks back, I wish I had a magic wand and could make this all happen on my own,” Obama told a meeting of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. “There are times where — until Nancy Pelosi is speaker again — I’d like to work my way around Congress.”
As he continued, Obama conceded that “we’ve got laws on the books that have to be upheld.” But he quickly added there are different ways to uphold the laws on the books. “You know as well as anyone that…how we enforce those laws is also important,” Obama said. Last month, the administration made a major, unilateral change in immigration law enforcement when it announced that the government will not initiate deportation proceedings against illegal immigrants unless they have committed serious crimes. To critics, Obama had indeed worked his way around Congress. To the Hispanic Caucus, Obama said his new policy will “prioritize criminals who endanger our communities, not students trying to achieve the American dream.”
The bigger problem, Obama said, is that sort of unilateral enforcement (or non-enforcement) only goes so far. “We live in a democracy, and at the end of the day, I can’t do this all by myself under our democratic system,” he said. “If we’re going to do big things — whether it’s passing this jobs bill, or the DREAM Act, or comprehensive immigration reform — we’re going to have to get Congress to act.”
This is the second time in recent months that Obama has publicly mused about going around Congress to enact immigration reform. In that speech to La Raza in July, he said that “some people want me to bypass Congress and change the laws on my own” — a prospect Obama said he found “very tempting.” But the president quickly added, “that’s not how our system works.”
As reported by Reuters:
President Barack Obama this week will announce a series of actions to help the economy that will not require congressional approval, including an initiative to make it easier for homeowners to refinance their mortgages, according to a White House official.
The actions come as Obama is facing resistance from Republicans to a $447 billion jobs package he has urged Congress to pass.
The first of the initiatives will be unveiled during Obama’s three-day trip to western states beginning Monday.
He will discuss the changes in mortgage rules at a stop in Nevada, which has one of the hardest-hit housing markets in the country.
The Obama administration has been working with the Federal Housing Finance Agency, the regulator for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, to find ways to make it easier for borrowers to switch to cheaper loans even if they have little to no equity in their homes.
The FHFA intends to loosen the terms of the two-year-old Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP), which helps borrowers who have been making mortgage payments on time but who have not been able to refinance as their home values have dropped.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the changes should boost refinancing because they will let banks avoid the risk of any “buy-back” on a HARP mortgage as long as borrowers have made their last six mortgage payments and they prove that they have a job or another source of passive income.
They are also set to reduce loan fees that Fannie and Freddie charge and waive fees on borrowers that refinance into loans with shorter terms, the Journal said.
Pricing details won’t be published until mid-November, and lenders could begin refinancing loans under the retooled program as soon as December 1, the newspaper reported, citing federal officials. Loans that exceed the current limit of 125 percent of the property’s value won’t be able to participate until early next year, the report said.
In Denver Wednesday, Obama will announce a student loan initiative.
“The only way we can truly attack our economic challenges is with bold, bipartisan action in Congress,” White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer told The New York Times.
“The president will continue to pressure Congressional Republicans to put country before party and pass the American Jobs Act, but he believes we cannot wait, so he will act where they won’t.”
As illegal foreign workers leave, owing to the E-Verify system being used by hundreds of thousands of honest business owners, it’s not surprisingly those jobs are being rapidly refilled by low income, blue and white collar unemployed Americans. Read the internet news of reports of lightening raids by ICE, which explains the sudden emergence of for ‘hire’ signs, as factories, plants, stores and construction are looking for legal job seekers. This is being persistently illustrated all throughout America, from the school janitor, roofers, manufacturing and across the occupational workforce. President Obama started a sound policy of deportations, but with the advisement from his Department of Justice attachment, there anti-America worker Liberal doctrines are now being observed through their attacks on different states. Currently the Democratic left is using an iron gauntlet against states, which will not be trodden down by judges and the courts.
Allowing foreign aliens to squat in this sovereign nation permanently without hindrance, is not what our law abiding country believes should happen. Obama’s administration has been corrupted by his Liberal czars such as Eric Holder, Nancy Pelosi, and Janet Napolitano and very strongly by Sen. Harry Reid, who nearly crippled E-Verify some years back. Since the stronger reappearance of E-Verify, Reid, and his cynic politicians has tried to weaken its influence, with the persistence of special interest lobbyists and radical open border organizations.
We must consider the consequences of not implementing the injection of the Lama Smith E-Verify program, the Legal Workforce Act, today and in the future. If the American people don’t demand Mandatory E-Verify, millions more people from South of our border and by international flights, will take advantage of us. The E-Verify program is a simple, an easy operational program that anybody can operate from a computer. But there are many lies spewing from those who are gaining much profit by the dismantling of this application. Foreign nationals will arrive in droves eating away at our failing educational system, health care and every form of Medicaid and welfare assistance. Over 100 billion dollars annually are already spent on the 20 million and more already here, but this is not a static dollar figure; it is rising constantly? Ask the officials in Los Angeles County, California and Clarke County, Nevada of how much is bled from their diluted welfare systems. Most states are in an unparalleled financial mess, from these entitlement programs. If President Obama and his current Imperial Court enter a second term in the White House, does that signify a new mass Amnesty is looming? Does that mean this country that is already suffering from the unfettered invasion, going to cough-up over $2.6 trillion dollars to make those already here comfortable? This is the heart palpitating analysis the Heritage Foundation has concluded on?
Call the Washington switchboard today and request the phone numbers of the House Ways and Means Committee on E-Verify Immigration program at 202-224-3121 insisting they vote for E-Verify the ‘Legal Workforce Act’ (H.R. 2885 bill.) You can also go to NumbersUSA website and be apprised of the current immigration situation, costs and rhetoric from the Liberal politicians and the unceasing pressure of the progressives and extremists. At the NumbersUSA site they have access to a free faxing system, so you can exclusively contact the reluctant lawmakers against E-Verify. In addition join your local TEA PARTY as millions have already, as this is the only route on commonsense to stop illegal immigration. A TEA PARTY majority in Washington means the dismantling of Sanctuary Cities, the Dream Act and no more Obama amnesties or Immigration reforms. In most cases it’s about money, greed and power. Mandatory E-Verify is a federal program, which nobody can get a waiver from once voted on. As Americans we can make a massive difference, on who comes to this country? People with high level degrees in technology, science and math, we should be given priority. Others with financial capital to invest should also receive priority visas.
Those who are looking for a handout, arriving from any country in the world should not be admitted. Since the 1986 Immigration mass amnesty, we have been importing poverty that is a fiscal nightmare for all of us. We also need field and agricultural worker, but not until the real double layer fence covers every inch of our border with Mexico and come here with legal authority, so they can be tracked. We need more ‘boots on the ground’ whether border agents of a permanent military presence, to interdict criminal from across our poorly constructed border barrier.
It’s evident to millions of Americans that the left side will be blinded, intentionally or not in the next election for President. Therefore, we need to scrutinize the integrity of our federal voting system, which must be overseen in every constituency. Absentee ballots are especially open to abuse and every effort must be accomplished to stop voter fraud and illegal aliens registering to vote. Violating our most sacred voting rights shows that the Democratic Party will stoop to any level, to gain the power by ignoring groups as ACORN and other innocuous new voter canvassing groups hunting for registration signatures; whether a new citizen or not?
ENACT ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION AS A FELONY AND NOT A CIVIL ACTION, AND THEN THE ILLEGAL INVASION WILL BE DRAMATICALLY REDUCED AND PERHAPS STOPPED.
Dave Francis, some of what you write above, is misleading. The so called honest business people you sight, have been the cause of the problems. In the quest to drive wages lower, eliminating any kind of security that a union might afford, they have invited said illegal aliens into the country, not because any liberal politicians want them here.
Your solution is draconian, and I don’t believe the the stats you state as real. Your release reads more like one that is prevalent out of the congress today, which instead of attending to the seriousness the country faces, you add to the problems. Perhaps, just perhaps, if the laws already on the books were enforced, that the so called “honest business owners” were heavily fined for having hired the illegals in the first place, then perhaps the problem wouldn’t be what it is today. Going after the illegals and deporting them, may be a step in the right direction, but in their wake, the jobs left behind are not always of sufficient quality to attract qualified U.S.citizens. Whether or not you know it or are your intentions, this leads to a nation of dependents in servitude to the so called thousands of honest business people, the very same ones who have established exactly what you seem to be against.
Adding more laws are nothing but feel good items, to curry favor with a narrow constituency of donors, which do not make for a better economy, which is what is needed in the U.S. today. Avoiding the real business of rebuilding the U.S.A., or as the saying goes, “kicking the can down the road”, is analogous to what the so called terrorists have wrought upon the country since 9/11. Blaming “Liberals” for the failures in a smoke screen for the congress inability to do the job the people elected them for, not to satisfy the “lobbyists” or “reelection donors”, which is prevalent in Washington D.C. today.
“O”s statement about waving his magic wand is telling. After all, isn’t that what he’s been doing since before and after he was elected? And now he wants another 4 years? If he had been as strong and backed up his words with action, instead of spreading the fairy dust and waving his magic wand around, the country wouldn’t be in such a mess that it finds itself in today. He’s responsible for the gridlock in Congress that has the country over the proverbial barrel, though he’s either too naive or is the fox in the hen house.
